Why are there blackouts for Sports?

How come the sporting event I am trying to watch is Blacked out?

Tbaytel, as a TV provider, does not have any control over what sporting events are blacked out. In almost all circumstances, the blackouts of sports events are the result of contractual agreements between the content owners (i.e., the sports leagues) and the programming distributors (i.e. Sportsnet, TSN, etc).

Each sports league has different rules about when a televised event is blacked out, and those rules are part of the contracts they sign with all television distributors. In most cases, the blackout results when a sports league prohibits an event from being televised locally if the event did not sell out all its tickets. Some games also may be "preempted," often because one game is "local" and a second game is not, or because two networks (broadcast and/or non-broadcast) both scheduled the televising of the same game in the same market.

So what you will find, even if a game is a locally covered team it may not be available for viewing on certain channels even including specialty channels. Each sports league has their own policies on Blackouts and they can be found on their respective websites.

These blackouts will cover streaming services as well as live channels. If a game is blacked out check the guide to see if the game is being shown on an alternate channel. If you cannot find it, you may need to check online for where the game is available.

If events that you want to watch are blacked out and you would like to voice your concerns:

  • Contact the broadcast-channel (TSN, Sportsnet, etc)
  • Contact the sports organization providing the event—for example, the NHL—and let them know you want to watch the event in your area
