Here are a few troubleshooting tips to try if data is not working on your iPhone.
Locked up
Sometimes the functionality of services on the phone can lock up and a Restart is necessary to restore access to these services. On all versions of the iPhone you can go to Settings > General > Shut Down, then drag the slider. If this method does not work and the phone is still locked up, try the following:
- Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears
- Drag the slider to the right
- Once the phone is off, press and hold the side button
- When the Apple logo appears, release the side button
Or
- Press and quickly release the volume up button
- Press and quickly release the volume down button
- Press and hold the side button
- When the Apple logo appears, release the side button
Once the phone is restarted - test your data access again.
Mobile Data Off
If you still do not have data access, the next step is to ensure Mobile Data is enabled:
- Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen
- If the Mobile Data button is dim, tap to turn it on
- Test to see if data access is restored
From within the Settings app:
- Go to Settings then tap on Cellular (If you don’t see Settings App on the Home screen, swipe left to access the App Library)
- If the icon is in the off position, tap the Cellular Data switch to turn on Switch On
- Test to see if data access is restored
Turn off Wi-Fi
- Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen
- If the Wi-Fi button is bright, tap to turn it off
- Test to see if data access is restored
Data Limitations
On an iPhone you can limit which apps have access to data. You may be attempting to use an app that does not have permission to use data.
- Go to Settings, choose Cellular
- Scroll down to Cellular Data section
- Check the App or Service that is having issues
- If the Cellular Data for the app is switched off, set the on/off switch to the On position for the app/service
- Test to see if data access is restored
Reset Network Settings
The last thing to try would be to reset the network settings in the phone. Be aware that resetting your network settings will cause the phone to forget Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth paired devices.
- Tap Settings
- Go into General then tap Reset or Transfer or Reset [Device]
- Tap Reset and then tap Reset Network Settings.
- Test to see if data access is restored
