Why is my streaming service buffering?

Streaming sites such as YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Crave, etc.

Available Bandwidth

Your subscribed Internet plan comes with an available bandwidth threshold. This bandwidth will be affected by any active usage from any devices connected to your Internet. Even though a connected device is not actively in use, it can still be using Internet bandwidth in the background such as completing software updates or refreshing content.

To stream video you will need the following available bandwidth:

  1. Low/Mobile Quality Video  -  1.5Mbps

  2. SD Quality Video  -  3Mbps

  3. HD Quality Video  -  5Mbps

  4. Ultra HD (4k) Quality Video  -  25Mbps

Each unique device will take up the noted bandwidth. An example of this would be is if you have 2 TV's streaming Ultra HD (4k) Quality Video (25Mbps x 2) and someone playing a video game in Ultra HD (4K) Quality Video (25Mbps) your home will be taking up 75Mbps before factoring in any other devices that may be connected to WiFi.

If you are unable to adjust your bandwidth to view at the video quality you want; you may need to adjust your quality of playback. Typically, the setting you want to find on the accounts is "Streaming Quality and Download Quality".

If you are experiencing buffering while streaming your favourite shows, you may need to increase your Internet plan. Please contact Tbaytel to explore additional speed options that your home may be eligible for.

Outdated Video Software/Hardware

It is important to keep running the latest version of software - and older streaming devices will cause lags with newer quality of feeds.

  1. Check your app for a software update

  2. Check your device’s hardware with the manufacturer - it is possible it has reached its End Of Life.

Your Home's WiFi

The WiFi in your home can play a role in buffering as the wireless LAN network can underperform if the WiFi coverage is inadequate. If you suspect you are having WiFi issues please review our WiFi coverage trouble shooting article.

Server Issues

Occasionally there will be issues that are originating with the providers servers. If issues persist but there is nothing reported there, contact the streaming service provider.
