The Atikokan-based volunteer cross-country skiing organization will replace a small bridge and dedicate a grooming sledge to help its Jackrabbit youth program engage in a healthy, outdoor activities.
The volunteer club in Fort Frances’ north end has turned an overgrown grass field into a flourishing meeting place for the community. The grant will help to provide free tools, equipment, ground plots and raised beds for gardeners aged 3-83.
In 2016 the humane society took in more animals than it ever has before. They will spay and neuter every animal before it’s adopted in order to help control the district’s pet population.
Sapay’s garden connects the entire community and everyone shares in the work and the fruits of its labour. They will enhance the garden with raised beds to increase production.
The club will bring the community together to host a road hockey tournament with an outdoor barbeque and other activities to raise funds and help revitalize the outdoor Evergreen hockey rink with new boards and lights.
Since 2013 the community has been helping unwanted and unfixed animals, bringing a veterinarian team to spay and neuter animals and update vaccines. They also find new homes for dogs in Kenora and Fort Frances.
The Hurricanes will donate food, presents and other items to families in need to teach the young hockey players about compassion and community caring.
Youth in grades 5-8 will participate in fun and interactive activities about living and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. The programs will be enhanced with craft supplies and new equipment.
NWOSSSA plans three conferences for students every year. The organization will be able to help cover some of the cost of venues, materials, supplies and guest speakers.
High risk youth from 24 remote Northern communities will take part in an after school arts program in collaboration with the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, building self-confidence and social skills while working on projects that will be featured at the art gallery.
Water at the Nestor Falls School is unsafe for consumption. Students will get their own reusable water bottle and water jugs at the school will be filled. Cooking classes for students in Grade 4-8 will plan and prepare a healthy meal for students once a month.
Students will be able to explore the future of food with a vertical hydroponic farm wall right in Claude E. Garton’s science lab. They will use the garden to inspire innovation, increase food security and access to healthy food, develop community and make change.
The school will enhance its garden with seating, garden boxes and trees. Students will learn about agriculture, biodiversity and pollinator species. The space will also be available to the public during off-school hours.
The Rainy River Community Garden is in need of 2 raised beds and a mini facelift. The garden has been full since its inception 6 years ago. As the community ages, we’ve noticed a higher demand for raised beds.
The ‘Soilmates’ are residents, permanent and summer, of the Municipality of Shuniah who are in the third year of gardening. The community gardens are located at the grounds of the MacGregor Recreation Centre on Lakeshore Drive.
Current River United Church has garden plots at the front of our Church on Morse Street where we grow fresh vegetables for our neighborhood food cupboard (food bank). The Current River Churches Food Cupboard provides assistance to individuals and families in need in the Current River area.
Our neighbourhood, in Cochenour, ON, would like to build more seating in our Municipal park. We are a small community within the Municipality of Red Lake, ON.
Clean up of the area’s public swimming areas. Last year we had 12 divers along with 15 volunteers from local service clubs (and the general public were topside) to help with the retrieval of debris that divers recover from the bottom of the lake.
The purchase of equipment (iPad mini, a green screen, lights, and microphones) will provide the Intermediate Leadership Team with the tools necessary to utilize green screen technology to engage the entire school community in mentoring/communication projects.
An additional Kevlar canoe will be purchased for the Outdoor Education component of the Explore Program, including Swim to Survive and Canoe Safety lessons.
A spring powwow and other events will help Indigenous students develop leadership, organizational, social and teamwork skills, and share their culture with non-Indigenous learners and the school community.

Two Die-alogue events (one in Thunder Bay and in Manitouwadge) will feature Phoebe, an inquisitive and precocious puppet who will lead a discussion with parents and teachers about how to best talk to children about death.
Best Start Hub is aiming to create a garden space, outdoor sensory area, music wall, water centres and other motor skill play areas for the entire community to utilize.
The MLC will move into its new school site at the retired Grandview Lodge in the fall. Students and staff want to build strong and long-lasting connections with their new neighbours through a community garden, events and volunteer work.
The Club wants to build a 400-450m kid-friendly development trail at Kinsmen Park. This trail will help introduce young riders to the sport of mountain biking and foster a love of the sport and healthy activity.
The Thunder Bay Giants Barbell Club is the only olympic weightlifting club registered with the Ontario Weightlifting Association (OWA) in northwestern Ontario. The club will purchase equipment necessary to promote and grow the sport of weightlifting in Thunder Bay. The funding will also support the club’s ability to provide competitions and officiating, allowing local athletes to experience the sport at a competitive level and helping them qualify for larger competitions without the extra expenses of travelling to southern Ontario.
With evidence identifying a direct link between activity and academics, McKellar Park School will purchase integral pieces of equipment for the school that will increase student activity. Increased activity and fitness enables students to focus, think, work and communicate and will provide McKellar Park students with problem solving skills and coping mechanisms long after they leave the classroom.
St. Joseph’s School currently offers healthy food at school through a snack program and daily breakfast program that is available to all students, free of charge. Weekends have been identified as a gap for students experiencing poverty and St. Joseph’s School will use the funding to continue their Nutrition On Weekends (NOW) program, allowing them to send healthy food items home and contribute to student success, health and wellbeing.
Laverty Park is the only municipal park within walking distance for many Red Lake families and this project will allow for park enhancements that include picnic tables for seating, as well as shared play items and equipment for children and families to enjoy.
In January 2019, the new ‘edge ARTS‘ youth arts hub, a 1600 sq. ft. multi-use space in Nipigon, will be ready to open! The Township of Nipigon would like to kick off programming with a free “creator/maker” focused drop-in program for youth aged 12-18 from Nipigon, Red Rock and the Red Rock Indian Band. With the purchase of tables, chairs, tools and materials, the space will be ready to host its first program. Participants will be connected with a project leader and local volunteer artists, which will help promote positive self esteem in our local at-risk youth and encourage aspiring young artists to continue exploring their creativity.
Everyone Curls is an initiative that focuses on building participation in the sport of curling at the Kenora Curling Club and the community. Through the purchase of storage, teaching, technical and participant equipment, as well as facility rental, the club's ultimate goal in Everyone Curls is to introduce the community to curling, increase and sustain participation, increase membership and club viability, making curling a sport that can be enjoyed at all levels of participation.
Started by high school student Faryn Gysen, Project Purse provides gently used purses filled with different items that benefit women in need, from toothbrushes to shampoo to jewelry. Entering into its 4th year, Project Purse would like to raise awareness about the program with an event and promotional material and purchase additional items to fill more purses for distribution through partner organizations, including small-denomination gift cards for restaurants so the recipients can also purchase a meal.
The winters in Red Lake may be long and cold, but the students in the St. John School Ski Club pass the time with cross country skiing! Currently there is not enough equipment for the number of students participating and the majority of what the club does have is over 20 years old. The school would like to be able to achieve the goal of having enough pairs of skis to allow every child interested in cross country skiing to participate in this fun physical activity, bringing the community together.
The Guild will use its funding to host a two-day quilt bee to promote the art of quilting and develop new quilters’ skills while completing 25 bed-sized quilts for donation in our community. The charity quilts are donated to various community organizations including St. Joseph’s Hospice and Hospital, George Jeffrey Children’s Centre, Faye Peterson House, numerous homes for the aged and the Cancer Care and Paediatrics units at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
The garden is centrally located and is used by 100+ gardeners from ages 3-83! The garden benefits the entire community – kids learn new food skills; people are able to gather in a safe and welcoming place where lots of learning and sharing happens among gardeners and neighbors; children, families and adults are able to grow their own local food; and the garden produces locally grown food for donation to the local soup kitchen and food bank. The funding will help expand the garden to include more raised beds to accommodate more citizens of all ages and abilities.
St. Andrew's Dew Drop Inn requires a new ventilation system for its kitchen. Volunteers feed up to 300 meals each day and a new ventilation system will keep them cool and productive as they feed hungry people in our community.
The Gillies Volunteer Fire Association wants to build a live fire training facility using sea-cans. Having a local facility will deliver high quality training experiences without having to send firefighters to cost-prohibitive and time-consuming courses. Mutual aid partners departments will also benefit by training together to improve firefighting preparedness.
Bringing Coding and Robotics Into the Classroom - A volunteer group of engineers and technologists are bringing coding and robotics into classrooms to awaken interest in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
The St. Ignatius Drama Department requires new technology (microphones and camera) and supplies (costumes, set design items) to fortify drama and generate interest in the arts.
StandUp4CleanUp creates a way for everyone to feel like part of the solution and part of their community with purpose and a sense of belonging by removing litter and cleaning the community. It's about taking pride in our beautiful home, our natural landscapes and waterways. The program is propelled by volunteers and community partnerships, fostering positive relationships with local businesses and organizations. The group will now be using their Tbaytel for Good funding to expand the program, increasing its ability to address litter and beautify Thunder Bay.
The group is working to bridge the gap created by a lack of teenage dramatic arts in their community. They received funding to bring in Green Thumb Theatre's production entitled "The Code" this November, but were in need of the remaining $500. The Code is a production that deals with harassment and cyberbullying. The play challenges teens to hold themselves accountable for their words and actions and consider what's at stake when lines are crossed. It provides connections to the curriculum through: healthy relationships, leadership, social responsibility, self-esteem, personal politics and violence against women. After the play, the production will also include time for questions with the actors.
The Shuniah Soilmates are a keen group of gardeners who grow food and flowers together for themselves and local charities. They will purchase a rototiller to help in their efforts.
Girls Night out for the Girls is a lighthearted evening of fun and laughter to support those going through cancer treatment. The event raises funds for chemotherapy care bags to ease the financial and emotional burden for those undergoing treatment. The group will purchase supplies for the bags.
Elementary school students at 9 Thunder Bay schools will be provided with non-perishable, nut-free, snack foods to be handed out at teachers' discretion, to children who don't have snacks or lunches.
The school community will stock a Blessings Cupboard with food basics, personal care items, clothing and household essentials for students to access year round.
The organization will re-engage community stakeholders to continue the work of securing mobility aids equipment to loan out to those in need, regardless of their ability to donate.
Community partners will conduct evening/night patrols to help people in need access services, making the community safe, enhancing people's well-being both mentally and physically, reducing crime, and being inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds.
Music has been clinically proven to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals. The purchase of musical instruments for the Safe Bed short-term residential program will assist clients on their road to recovery from mental health and addiction crises.
Students will create care packages for expectant mothers at Faye Peterson House as a sign of hope for a fresh start with their new babies. Students will help design the materials, sew the baby items (hats, booties, blankets, neck warmers), decorate and pack the boxes, and document the project with a video.
Keewatin Public School would like to purchase two class sets of snowshoes to fit the primary and senior students to allow the entire student body to enjoy outdoor physical education time and the amazing Forest School program.
The community of Cat Lake puts together the best outdoor ice rink possible for the community’s children. The current plywood boards need to be replaced and the community would like to use treated 2 x 6” treated boards which will last much longer than plywood and provide a sustainable outdoor rink for years to come.
Harvest Kenora operates a Collective Micro-Farm, called Homerun Gardens, which serves as a skill-share venue for new and experienced gardeners. This grant would allow the group to increase accessibility by providing amenities to allow people of all abilities and demographics to enjoy the garden. As well, the funding would allow for resources to better serve, educate and enable those who wish to grow food for themselves and others.
The Viking Room will be a multi-use hub to support co-curricular activities throughout the school. This inclusive space would see intramural programming before/after school and at lunch time, as well as accommodate student-led activities such as event planning, team building activities and a general meeting space available to all students.
The proposed new, accessible and sensory-friendly playground equipment will serve both the St. Basil’s Catholic School and the community of White River. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and those who struggle with mobility and/or accessibility will have a safe place to play with their peers and families.
The Make a Big Splash Spray Legion Park Rehabilitation will see a spray park constructed as part of a large-scale rehabilitation of the Legion Park in Fort Frances.
Helping One Dog at a Time will support the Network’s mandate to rescue dogs and cats across northern Ontario, support spay and neuter clinics and promote education around healthy lifestyles for family pets.
Backpacks for Hope will support community members before, during and after addiction treatment by providing backpacks to help their emotional and physical recovery journey.
The Thunder Bay Free Store will fund a community care centre project, a youth holiday gift drive, and help re-stock supplies at the store.
The Thunder Bay Emergency Shelter will purchase several picnic tables, including two accessible tables, for its outdoor picnic area so people and families living in poverty can enjoy a nourishing hot meal in a healthy outdoor environment.
The Eighth Street Trails Committee in Fort Frances will purchase equipment, trail enhancements and new signage to improve their walking and cross-country ski trails.
St. Patrick High School in Thunder Bay will purchase equipment for its Clover Café, which will be managed and run by Hospitality and Tourism students, teachers and volunteers. All proceeds from the café will be donated to local charities.
The committee will purchase and rent equipment for its 10th Rockin’ Recovery event, which provides inspiring storytelling, world-class musical performances and a safe and friendly experience.
The club will purchase storage, kitchen and recreation equipment to optimize its ability to serve its more than 100 members.
